In the beginning...
The Grand Hotel Belle Vue was designed in 1912 by architect Oscar Dumont on a triangular ground plan, the three corners of which are emphasized by a tower. The continuous canopies with crowning balconies above the ground floor and the first floor provide a horizontal effect. The pseudo-timber frame on the upper floor and the gables indicate an Anglo-Norman influence.
The first tourists
The hotel dates from a period when the emerging tourism De Haan changed drastically. There was no question of mass tourism as we know it today; after all, travel was the privilege of the very rich. At first the hotel guests were mainly English people who had made a fortune in colonial India. They traveled with their entourage to the nearby tram station of De Haan, where they were picked up by the hotel porters, dressed in typical red suits.
Albert Einstein
Interesting to know is that the famous professor Albert Einstein, who, on the run from the Nazi regime, spent six months in De Haan in 1933, often came here to enjoy a cup of tea with raisin bread.
De Groote - Van Brussel Family
Until 2006, the hotel was continuously in the hands of the same family that for three generations, thanks to its professional hospitality, made the Grand Hotel Belle Vue a true household name on the Belgian coast.
Under the passionate leadership of Didier and Petra De Groote - From September 2006, a new, fresh wind has been blowing through Grand Hotel Belle Vue from Brussels, after all, they made it a point of honor to accentuate the glory and the classy appearance of the beautiful building and rejuvenate interior with a gentle touch. Since then, guests have been welcome all year round both in the hotel and in the renovated Bistro Place Royale.
In 2021, the municipality of De Haan awarded the renovation of Grand Hotel Belle Vue with the first heritage plume ever.
